Supervision and consultations

For professionals working with children and adolescents using Dr. Ben Furman's methods

Supervision

What is
supervision

Supervision is a safe, structured form of professional support for those working with children, adolescents, and families (including psychologists, educators, teachers, therapists, trainers, social workers, and foster parents).

Its goal is to develop professional competencies, increase the effectiveness of actions, and care for the well-being of the helping professional.

We work in the SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) approach, which focuses on resources, possibilities, and effective strategies rather than problem analysis. Supervision in this approach strengthens the participants' sense of agency and helps them find solutions tailored to the realities of their work.

What is SFBT supervision?

  • discussing specific professional situations and cases from the participants' practice,
  • identifying one's own resources as well as the resources of clients/students,
  • seeking solutions that are already partially working and can be strengthened,
  • reflection on professional role, boundaries, and responsibility,
  • strengthening mental resilience and preventing professional burnout.

Readiness for supervision – assumptions

Supervision is most effective when the participant:

  • is ready to reflect on their own practice,
  • wants to develop their competencies rather than receive "ready-made solutions,"
  • embraces the perspective of learning from experience,
  • respects the principles of confidentiality and mutual respect.

Benefits of participating in supervision

Individual participant level (specialist, teacher, foster parent)

  • increasing effectiveness in working with children, youth, and families,
  • deeper reflection on one's own professional practice and the role of a helper,
  • greater awareness of one's own resources, boundaries, and responsibilities,
  • opening up new perspectives and ideas for future actions,
  • increasing confidence in making professional decisions,
  • developing mental resilience and better coping with emotional strain,
  • strengthening the sense of purpose and job satisfaction, preventing burnout and overload.

Institutional
level
(schools, clinics,
institutions)

  • a more stable and better-supported staff of specialists and teachers,
  • improving work quality through reflective team practice,
  • reducing turnover and absenteeism caused by professional overload,
  • strengthening a culture of learning and teamwork.

Local government
level

  • long-term strengthening of the well-being of staff working with children and youth,
  • reducing the social costs of burnout and staffing crises,
  • professionalizing the support system in education and social services,
  • building lasting competencies among local specialists.

CONSULTATIONS in Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group methods

What are
Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group consultations?

Consultations in the Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group methods are a practical form of support aimed at parents, teachers, specialists, and institutions working with children and adolescents.

Both methods are rooted in SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy) and focus on developing specific skills rather than focusing on problems, deficits, or diagnoses.

Kids’ Skills
is used for individual work with a child. Skillful Group is a method for working with a group (a class, a team, or an educational group), strengthening cooperation, responsibility, and social skills.

Role of the consultant:

In Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group consultations, the facilitator acts as a consultant, not a supervisor.

  • supports the development of the participant's competence in working with both methods,
  • helps to understand the principles of Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group,
  • identifying solutions that are already partially working and can be strengthened,
  • provides support in planning and adapting methods to a specific context (a child or a group),
  • shares the structure of the process and proven SFBT tools.

What do the consultations involve?

  • reframing the difficulties of children and adolescents into learnable skills,
  • selecting key skills for a child or group,
  • planning the skill-learning process and reinforcing progress,
  • support in collaborating with the environment (parents, school, team),
  • adapting Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group methods to the realities of a specific institution.

Benefits of participating in consultations

  • increased effectiveness in working with children and groups thanks to the clear structure of the methods,
  • greater clarity in selecting Kids’ Skills and Skillful Group tools,
  • the opportunity to discuss the process at a methodological level,
  • better understanding of how to guide a child or group step-by-step in learning skills,

Institutional level
(schools, counseling centers,
institutions)

  • a consistent and unified methodological approach for the team,
  • greater effectiveness of interventions without increasing their frequency,
  • improving the climate in classrooms and educational groups,
  • easier cooperation between teachers, specialists, and parents.

Local government
level

  • systemic implementation of effective methods based on SFBT

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about the differences between supervision and consultation

For teachers, educators, psychologists, counselors, parents, and teams working with children and youth who are practitioners of the Kids' Skills method and/or Skillful Group educators.

4. Can consultations focus on an entire class or group?
